LS Aalborg infoaften: Occupy Bufferzone - En bevægelse for et samlet Cypern

Så er det atter blevet tid til infoaften med LS Aalborg.
Maria Hadjimichael, den cypriotiske aktivist vil holde et foredrag om situationen på Cypern og historien bag. Efterfølgende vil der være åbent for spørgsmål og debat.

Arrangementet vil forgå på engelsk og ganske GRATIS!

Der vil være mulighed for at spise lækker cypriotisk mad samt øl og vand kl. 18.00 for den lette pris af 30 kr. pr. næse.

Now its time again for an info-evening with LS Aalborg. Maria Hadjimichael, the cypriot activist will do an introduction to the situation on Cyprus and the history behind it.
After the introduction there will be open for debat and questions.

The event will be done in english and is of cause FREE!

At 18.00 we will serve nice cypriot food for the fantastic prize of 30 kr. Beer and soda can be bought on the side.

"Cyprus is a small island state in the Eastern Mediterranean with a disproportionate, for its size number of troops and military bases; the “National Guard”, the “Turkish Cypriot Security Force”, the “Hellenic Force in Cyprus”, the “Turkish Force in Cyprus”, the British and the American troops and the UN’s multinational force, have transformed the island into a huge barrack, making it one of the most militarized regions of the whole planet.

In 1974, the military coup by the Greek Junta and the consequent invasion by the Turkish Army, were the events which shaped the current status quo; this year marks the 40th anniversary of the division of Cyprus in the Southern part, the Republic of Cyprus, an internationally recognized state and member of the EU, and the Northern part, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey.

This presentation will be a journey through the modern history of Cyprus (since its independence in 1960) and the more recent developments focusing on the rise of resistance movements such as the Occupy Buffer Zone. Even though the island's division suggests the continuous failure of its people to see beyond the nationalists' propaganda, resistance from the grass roots is giving hope that another demilitirized Cyprus is possible."
